We at smrto are in the process of getting a petition together to ban trucking over 2.5 tons from using Harvard Street from Mystic Ave to Winchester Street. We would like to hear your thoughts on this issue.

A group of South Medford Residents where just thinking how can we become part of Somerville!
Greetings Mayor Curtatone,
Many of us in my neighborhood, her in South Medford, have commented on your administration and the effective change you have brought to the City of Somerville in the way of city services and responding positively to your Citizens request for them.
These comments often come on Saturday morning, Neighbors chatting, coffee in one hand, rake in the other as we wonder out loud to each other what it would be like to be part of an effectively run and responsive city such as Somerville. Imagine somebody says, “ more police officers on duty than standing over a hole in the street!” Then the most enticing thought of all “Who can we contact about seceding and how do we do it” says another. Governor Palin comes to mind but I’m sure she is busy running for VP and we are pretty sure putting to use her very limited downtime compiling a list of books that should be banned in US libraries while she waits for her new pair of glasses at her local Lens Crafters. So she is out. Ah, lets take a chance and write directly to you but then would you want us?
We have streets that are not swept, sidewalks that are crumbling, curbs that don’t’ meet ADA requirements, Harvard Street is on the verge of collapse with truck traffic, Trees Stumps from years of cutting with abandon learned I believe from one of those annually conferences, held in Brazil on “how to get rid of an Amazon rainforest and all the maples on Yale” Officials at city hall may argue that Medford loves it trees. If you ask them they would probably point to the Four remaining trees in South Medford and how each as been named such as DO NOT ENTER, ONE WAY, RESIDENT PARKING ONLY and 2 HOUR PARKING, nailed right to them so we too can get to know them before the word comes down such “Hey Mac go to Princeton Street and Take down DO NOT ENTER,” and maybe add “oh and leave the stump because we are Tree City USA.” Nice huh. Citizens are split 50 50 on why they get hysterical during these times; could it be because the tree is coming down or is it the site of seeing a Medford City Vehicle for the first time in a couple of years causing they same type of hysteria not seen since the 60’s when the Beatles landed at JFK. With that said, I think the transition to Somerville trucks may cause some Trauma but easily fixed by a couple of “go a rounds” with Somerville Street Sweepers. Then there is Transportation and Development “offices” here in Medford. Most of the Mayor’s Green Line appointees think that Rapid Transit is something you “drive thru” in an SUV and the Green Line has something to do with St. Patrick’s Day. Our development office believes development starts at 9 dollars a month over at the WOW Gym on Boston Avenue, so not much has happened here. It sounds really funny, like a John Water’s film, unfortunately for us the star of this is our 20+ year leader who obviously is not Divine
We will be waiting for your response, pray its positive and until that time will be looking up each time a Jet takes off over our houses (every 4 minutes) like the needy war tired souls in Berlin did during the 1948 airlift thinking, “will he want us? “ Just remember this, with just a little help, some guidance and basic services, those same folks wouldn’t even recognize Berlin today!
Can’t wait to dial 311!.
Thank you
The City Service refugees of South Medford
Why doesn't a contingent of SMRT people start attending City Council meetings and also visit the Mayor's office and start demanding some change and some responsiveness on issues such as trees, road improvements and maintenance, etc.? I know it can possibly seem hopeless but I just can't believe that this City government can be THAT impenetrable, obstinate and strangely dedicated to inaction and backwardness that they can't be forced, over time, with concerted citizen effort, to STOP this horsecrap and start making Medford a better place, i.e. as Somerville government has done to a great extent.
